With regular practice, you will rest assured, begin to experience and realise the answer to every one of the above questions.
I'm not fit. Can I do yoga?
Yes, indeed. In fact, you are a perfect fit for yoga. Anyone and everyone can benefit from yoga. Fitness is not a prerequisite for yoga just as knowing to swim is not a prerequisite for learning to swim. Yoga is not a competition (maybe only with yourself). With each passing day of yoga, you push yourself to your next limit which will give you an immense sense of self-confidence and overall well-being.
I'm not flexible. Can I do yoga?
Yes, indeed. Yoga is not about the flexibility of the body but the flexibility of the mind. All that is required to start yoga is the willpower to take the first step to overcome the procrastination of your good health and well-being. Let us first register a basic fact – the more supple (flexible with the right lubrication) our body is, the longer we live. When we use our bodies less, it becomes useless. The physical tension in our body correlates to mental tension and hence it is prudent to remove these blocks without any further ado.
Will the yoga postures be painful?
For most students, the initial days will be painful. That is because our body parts have begun to rust. The pain is a good indicator of impending arthritis in the near future. It is better to remove the pain in slow, daily instalments now rather than to suffer from it chronically at a later stage with a dramatic impact on the quality of our life. The upside is that if the practice is adhered to on a regular basis, then the pain is lesser with each passing day. After a while, one would not want to skip a single day of practice, since the feeling is like being on top of the world.
What are the feel-good factors of doing yoga?
Hatha Yoga practice helps balance the GABA, serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin, endorphins, etc. which are the feel-good hormones in our body resulting in peace, positivity, tranquillity, happiness, and bliss, contentedness, satisfaction and gratification. When present in balanced proportions these hormones can help address anxiety, depression, bipolar, insomnia, OCD, etc. Besides the obvious physical benefits, one can reap a great deal of mental and emotional benefits as well from yoga.
How is Hatha Yoga different from other forms of exercise?
Firstly, Hatha Yoga is not just an exercise. It is a divine art form which balances the physical, mental, emotional and astral constructs of a human being. Hatha Yoga is more than 15,000 years old and has stood the ultimate test, the test of time. It is not a fad that has cropped up over the past century but rather has been around for several millennia. It is part of the 8 limbs of Ashtanga Yoga (Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi) which ultimately leads us to Moksha (victory over maya). Hatha Yoga is the most natural way to become supernatural.
What is the correlation between Hatha Yoga and Health?
Hatha Yoga is the foundation for a healthy body. Without a healthy body, one cannot have a healthy mind. As per the Vedas, health (Arogya) is the ultimate prerequisite for pursuing Kama (pleasures), Artha (wealth), Dharma (righteousness) and Moksha (salvation). Our conditioning has unfortunately made us so blinded and short-sighted that we have ended up giving attention to our properties instead of our bodies. Our body is literally a temple that should not be desecrated but rather consecrated with proper exercise (asanas), breathing (pranayama), relaxation (nidra), diet (sattvic), and thinking (meditation).
Why can’t I learn yoga from a book?
Hatha Yoga is a very precise science that has a profound bearing on your being. If done correctly, it can activate the chakras of the body in a safe and sustainable way. If Hatha Yoga is done wrongly it can lead to severe and crippling damages physiologically, psychologically and emotionally. Hence it is better to not do yoga than to try doing it from an unrecognised and untrustworthy source. It is imperative to learn yoga only from a genuine Guru who has received initiation as a Yoga Siromani or Acharya from a reputable parampara (lineage).
Is Hatha Yoga religious?
Hatha yoga is as non-religious as medicine. Hatha Yoga comes from the “Sanathan Dharma” which translates to “Universal Truth”. This is an ancient, systematic and scientific way of living which guides us on how to exist: think, feel, speak, act, eat, live, behave, breathe, co-exist, manifest, transcend, etc. This is not a religious code of conduct but rather a practical guide to life. Hence, Hatha Yoga transcends all religion, caste, creed, caste, colour, gender and race. It belongs to all of humanity.
What ailments can Hatha Yoga help with?
Hatha Yoga is a panacea – the cure-all. This is not an overarching statement because we can show various references from scientific articles, journals, and books for almost every other ailment, disease and condition. This powerful treatment goes right to the root cause and establishes a sustainable cure for the practitioner. Hatha Yoga can work as a powerful intervention and prevention tool. Please do have a detailed conversation with the Guru for any particular ailments to seek guidance as to how it is resolved with the Shivashaktivigyan Yoga Program.
What should I wear for the yoga classes?
It is best to be dressed in a natural material like cotton and comfortable clothing which do not restrict blood circulation at any part of the body.
What should I bring to yoga class?
Please bring a yoga mat, a bottle of water, a thin cotton sheet (to cover the body during the final relaxation for yoga Nidra) and a seat cushion pillow/yoga foam block (to help sit upright).
What can I eat before class?
Before the yoga classes, it is ok to have heavy meals for up to 2 hours, light snacks for up to 1 hour, and fruits can be taken up to 30 mins. During the call, it is best to drink as little water as required. After 30 mins of the end of yoga class, one can consume as per their desire.
In what language will the classes be conducted?
The medium of instruction will be English.
